University of Auckland Regalia Guide

The University of Auckland has worked very closely with Academic Dress Hire to ensure the quality of the regalia on hire to students for graduation. This is particularly important for the correct colour of hoods as these are specified in the University’s regulations. Academic Dress Hire then uses the profits generated from regalia hire to support a variety of scholarships, grants and donations at the university and other institutions. Below you will find the latest tips and guidelines from the University of Auckland about what to wear for graduation.

What to wear for Diploma Recipients

 

• The diploma scarves are black, lined with coloured satin with a band and trim of the same colour.
• The design of the trim reflects a traditional Mâori pattern symbolising the steps towards knowledge.
• The colour matches the degree cluster most closely associated with the diploma.

Bachelor and Masters Degree Regalia

 

• The bachelors and masters degree gowns for the University of Auckland are the same as those for the same degrees at the University of Cambridge.
• The hood for the bachelors degree is lined with coloured satin and bordered with white fur.
• The masters degree hood has no fur.
• Both hoods are the same size and shape as the hood for the Cambridge Master of Arts.

Doctoral Degree Regalia

Higher doctoral degrees

• The gown for higher doctoral degrees is the same as the Cambridge Master of Arts, but it is made of black silk or scarlet silk or cloth.
• The hood is made wholly of silk and is of the following colours for the different degrees.

Doctor of Philosophy

• The gown for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy is as for the Cambridge Master of Arts with the addition of scarlet facings edged with gold satin.
• The hood is made wholly of scarlet silk
• A velvet Tudor bonnet with gold cord is worn by PhD recipients.

Other doctoral degrees

• The gowns for the following doctoral degrees are the same as the Cambridge Master of Arts
• The doctoral set includes Masters Gown, satin fronts and degree hood in the same colour, and a Tudor bonnet.
• The doctoral fronts are worn over the gown with the coloured facings at the front, and fronts should be put on first.  Next, place the degree hood over the fronts.

Graduation Day

Your graduation ceremony is a formal celebration of your achievement, and we encourage you to dress appropriately.
On your graduation day, you must wear the correct academic regalia appropriate to your degree and/or diploma.
In addition to the correct academic regalia, you may choose to wear clothing or garments of honour from your culture or home country such as a sari, korowai or ta'ovala. This is a welcome enrichment to the colour of the graduation ceremonies.

Advice from Previous Graduands

 

• The temperature in the venue is reasonably warm, especially when wearing regalia.
• Men may find it helpful to wear a shirt and tie, as placing the neckband of your hood under your tie helps to hold your hood in place (women may need to pin their hood to their gown).
• Graduation day involves a considerable amount of walking and standing, and a lot of stairs, so very high heels may not be practical.
• Choose a hairstyle that allows you to wear your trencher comfortably.
• You will be videoed and photographed throughout the day, so you might like to look your best!
